Have you noticed that there is an increase in youth crime around the world. There seems to be violence everywhere! Is it because we are being made more aware of it through the media or is it really on the rise? And dare I suggest it might be linked to social networking?
Every day we see youths of some kind on the rampage. One day its Europe, then USA Europe, Africa and Asia. Recently there was a youth shot dead by police in Greece. Now they are going into there second week. of violence, looting and destruction.
It has been claimed that rioting has even spread to neighbouring countries. The suggestion is that the boy in question has a profile on Facebook. So he not only has friends in his own village but has friends (or enemies) around the world.
So is it social networking to blame for the rise in youth violence?
The implications for good or harm of network sites has not yet been ascertained.
There is a complete change in the structure we provide our youth. In the olden days we would provide the youth with a particular set of skills which were know to us and the manner that we imparted those skills to the youth was clearly defined.
Now a large percentage of our youth are left to there own devices. There is no goals, no structure for achievement and no guarantee that what they are doing is safe or life-supporting.
On the other hand maybe this generation of youth are pioneers who are creating their own domain as they go along. I know I and a good proporton of adults have grown to rely on their knowledge, technology and aptitude for creative change. They definitely seem to have a greater adaptability, skill level and awareness of the broader implications of the modern technologies.
One wonders what effect it must have on the young brain to be older people so reliant on their knowledge. This seems at odds with traditional development.How do they feel when they know more than the teacher? Is this motivating to them or does it create a division between youth and adults that goes beyond the generation gap. And why is it that they can so easily adapt to the technology. Are they born with the skill?
But maybe there is a downside to all this. With cell phones, internet, and social networking sites there is automatic transfer of ideas. But these ideas are uncensored and could serve to fuel amplified feelings and subsequent violence. Afterall, without parental supervision the youth may not have mature enough judgement to be able to filter the good from the bad, because it is not always black and white, but rather grey.
Are the older generation being over critical, or do they deserve reproach for allowing the awareness of the youth to be polluted by forces that often destroy innocence, and sometimes character along with it.
There is an old saying: "whatever you put your attention on grows stronger in your life.." And with our youth putting enormous amounts of attention on the virtual world, one can only hope something good will come out of this moment in history.

I knew things were bad at DMOZ

I knew things were bad at DMOZ. But I guess I didnapos;t realize how bad, until I started eavesdropping on a few forums, and reading the avalanche of e-mails I received on the subject.
When it takes up to two years to get a web site listed, there" a serious problem. When perfectly qualified web sites are rejected for no other reason than the fact the editor considers them serious competition to his or her own site, there" a serious problem.
When you e-mail DMOZ about the status of your web site and donapos;t even receive a courtesy response to your questions, there" a serious problem.
When you have egotistical DMOZ editors fighting each other to have their own web sites listed, there" a serious problem.
And quite frankly, I donapos;t isee how the mess DMOZ has created can be fixed. With an apparently endless backlog of web sites waiting to be approved, how can they possibly catch up. The answer is, they canapos;t.
But this isnapos;t just a performance issue weapos;re talking about here, this is a morality issue. The very fact that it" a matter of public record what DMOZ is doing speaks volumes about the character of many of their editors.
After all, much of what Iapos;ve written negatively about DMOZ came directly from the mouths andor keyboards of DMOZ editors themselves. At least they claimed to be DMOZ editors. And for the life of me, I canapos;t imagine why anyone would want to own up to that dubious distinction, unless it were actually true.
This is what one DMOZ editor had to say. Since I became an editor for DMOZ a few weeks ago (albeit for a tiny category) I have seen on the DMOZ editors board that there are a lot of good volunteers there who work hard to try to keep the directory up to date and useful. Its a shame because there are also seem to be a lot of editors there who are lazy, or who have let the power of being an editor go to their heads. (The people who DONapos;T ever post on the editor message boards, or update their categories, etc.)
I think some method to allow webmasters to check the status of their site submissions (and to know why their site gets rejected if it is something fixable, and the site is related to the category and not just a spam submission, etc) would be an excellent first istep to improving the system. Unfortunately the editor management isystem seems to be circa 1998 ... I am only guessing based on designfunctionality, but I assume big changes are not coming any time soon.
Even Google may have come to the realization that DMOZ may have finally run its course. Previously found via its own tab, the Open Directory has been demoted to the more page.
This was Google" explanation for the demotion. We analyzed what people were using, and that had become less popular over time. As the web grows, directory structures get harder to use. It didnapos;t iseem to be worth the real estate on the home page. Ouch!
Demoting the directory may also be a way for Google to eventually distance itself from the Open Directory Project, which powers it. The volunteer-produced directory was added back in 2000, near the height of the Open Directory" popularity.
Today, there are often complaints that the ODP, has not keep up with submission demands. In addition, there have been delays in getting the most current data out in a format that ODP partners such as Google can use.
Ultimately, any problem with the Open Directorywhich is not in Google" controlstill reflects badly on Google.
I do have a solution to this whole DMOZ mess, if anyone wants to hear it. I say nuke the site for morbid, and put it out of its misery!

Lets face it. Advertising on eBay can get expensive. You can spend more on advertising than your items are worth if you arent careful. Listing a single item for auction on eBay can cost anywhere from the minimum of $0.35 on up to several dollars and the advertisement is only good for a maximum of 10 days.

There is a better and much less expensive way to advertise your merchandise on eBay and that way is to set up a store on eBay rather than auctioning individual items. This isnt to say that you should never put items up for auction but the auction should only be used to attract customers to your eBay store.
Setting up a store on eBay can cost less than ten dollars per month. It wouldnt take a lot of single auction fees to cost more than ten dollars each month. We live in a different age. Entrepreneurs abound on the web and some know
very little about business. And what about the people who are good at
business in the traditional sense but know very little about technical stuff
on the internet. There is a pathway to success but there are realities and
options we have to consider.
The internet entrepreneur needs help? There is a road to financial success.

different ones and how do we know for sure which ones are right for us?
Most people want to be paid directly for sales. If this is the case the site

possible have some form of recurring payments as part of your offer. It
would be nice to have full marketing and infrastructure support, but you can

You must approach the potential business with caution. I have been scammed
more than once and it is painful, especially when there is nothing you can do
about it. It is not like you can run around the block and grab the crook. If
you lose your money the chances of getting it back are extremely SLIM.
What do you look for when starting your own work at home business? We must
have a basic list of things that ensure we are on the right track. Here are a
few suggestions:
SUBSCRIPTION BASED SELLING IS GOOD - With so many scams out there, one thing
to look for is a revenue source that builds. This makes sure you do not have
to start from scratch every month. Each month you retain a membership of
paying customers and build on this the next month. This allows the income to
build nicely.
WHAT PRODUCT will you be offering to customers? Is it something
most people need? Try to put yourself in the customer's position. If you
would not find it necessary, would others keep paying for the product or
service? Is it digital? If not, what problems are there with shipping? You
must spend a lot of time thinking deeply about your product. There are
millions of products getting offered daily. There are many ideas out there.

OUTLAY - How much does it cost to join this opportunity, and is it an ongoing
cost? How long will it be before your costs are matched by revenue received?
Many people outlay a fee and don't start making revenue, and then face
another monthly fee. How does the compensation plan work? How long does it
take before I at least break even? You MUST address these issues up front
before wasting time and money.
MARKETING - It is not enough to find a company with a product or an
opportunity that you really like. You must learn how to market it properly.
You must also weigh up the pros and cons of doing things yourself, or getting
professional help. You can literally waste months trying to accomplish what
